Internet Speed and Streaming
These days everyone has seemed to drop the cable plans in favor of Netflix. It’s totally understandable, too. Why pay for TV when you can watch Netflix on the internet? If you’ve been experiencing buffering while trying to catch up on your Netflix series, or you’re just plain curious, we’re going to help you figure out how fast your internet needs to be for Netflix streaming.
When we take a look at the internet connection speed recommendations provided directly from Netflix themselves (https://help.netflix.com/en/node/306) , we will find the following:
“Below are the internet download speed recommendations per stream for playing TV shows and movies through Netflix.
- 5 Megabits per second – Required for broadband connection speed
- 5 Megabits per second – Recommended broadband connection speed
- 0 Megabits per second – Recommended for SD quality (Standard-definition)
- 0 Megabits per second – Recommended for HD quality
- 25 Megabits per second – Recommended for Ultra HD quality
So What Does this Mean?
Essentially, what we can take from the recommendations straight from Netflix is that you only require a minimum connection speed of 0.5 megabits per second in order to use their platform. With that being said, you should also keep in mind that by only having the minimum requirement, you will have a limited experience in regards to streaming quality and amount of load-time/buffering experienced. That means you shouldn’t expect HD streaming capabilities, which is fine if that doesn’t bother you. Expect 0.5-1.5 Mbps internet plans in the U.S. to cost anywhere from $20-$35/month on average.
If you want at least standard-definition quality streaming, then you’re going to want at least 3.0 megabits per seconds for your internet plan. This is going to cost an average of $40/month in the United States. It is also very important to keep in mind how many devices are going to be used for video streaming. If you have a standard service, but want to stream from 3+ devices on a regular basis, the quality will suffer and more time will be spent buffering.
How Fast Does My Internet Need to be for HD Netflix Streaming?
If you’re someone who really cares about watching their favorite TV shows and movies in HD (and we don’t blame you!), then you’re going to want an internet plan that provides at least 5.0 megabits per second streaming capabilities. This will cost about $30-$50 on average in the United States. And if you want HD streaming to a lot of devices in your home, then you’re looking at anywhere from 25-1000 Mbps speeds for $50-$100/month on average in the U.S.
When it all comes down to it, how well your Netflix streams is all dependant on your internet plan speed. While you Netflix is going to cost you $10.99/month, you’re going to need to spend at least a total of $30.99/month for both Netflix and Internet streaming capabilities to enjoy your TV shows and movies in HD quality. Of course, if you’re someone who doesn’t mind low quality streaming, then you can save about $10-$30/month, which really adds up over time.
We really hope this article helped you get a better idea on what you need in order to properly watch Netflix on your Internet plan!
