Verizon Gigabit Internet Review

Verizon Gigabit Internet Review

Things in the technology world are rapidly changing, and that definitely means it keeps getting faster. The internet is about as necessary as water these days, and the Verizon Fios Gigabit Connection package won’t leave you dry.

The plan offers high Mbps (940 downloads & 880 uploads) to ensure you get the speed you need. Now an entire family can share the same network and enjoy the internet lag-free and in HD.

As you read on, you’re going to learn more about the fiber-optic and Fios connection options and read our Verizon Gigabit Internet review. There’s a reason why it’s getting so popular, so cross your fingers you’re located in the small (but growing) service area.

What’s the Deal with the Verizon Fios Gigabit Internet Connection?

The internet is turning a new page with fiber-optic and Fios connections. It’s essentially the new broadband, and broadband – the new DSL. Sure, it’s nowhere near as slow as DSL, but you get the picture.

This huge upgrade means you can now get Verizon Gigabit service that is over 10 times faster than traditional speeds of cable and DSL.

What Makes Fios Different?

Fios connections are made with fiber cables. These types of cables are superior at digital data transport compared to analog options, such as landline and coaxial cables.

The thing is the internet is mostly made up of these fiber networks, and the most commonly used bridge between those networks to your home are made with the cables used for TV and phone services. That’s simply because it’s cheaper for internet providers…but things are changing.

Verizon Fios, as well as other internet companies, have decided to invest in the benefit of their customers, and are now offering high quality, super fast fiber-optic connections. In due time, fios and fiber are going to be the new standard connection speeds with who knows what coming up next.

Why is it Faster?

With a fiber network, data and information are transmitted as light instead of radio frequency transmission. If you’re familiar with how fast the speed of light is, that’s definitely faster than the latter. Not just that, but fiber connections offer more space (literally) for data to pass through.

Another reason Fios connections are faster is that they’re not sharing the lines with bandwidth and DSL connections, helping to prevent slow signal, loss of signal, and other problems commonly faced.

Things to Consider

Before you dive right into a Verizon Gigabit service plan, there are a few things you should take into consideration.

  • It takes much longer for a fios installation because the technicians need to deal with installing an entirely new connection system for your home. This means a new Optical Network Terminal, in-home cables, as well as configuration for modems, TV boxes, etc. Expect it to take anywhere from 3-6 hours.
  • If you’re looking to get fast internet on a tight budget, then Verizon Fios might not be the best option for you. Pricing starts from $39.99/monthly, not including the modem rental fee (if you choose to go with Verizon’s modem). If your main concern is quality of connection, then you should definitely hop on a Verizon Gigabit plan.
  • You do have the option to use your own modem if you would like. With your own modem, you can save on the monthly rental fee and/or access advanced features on your router. The hardware setup will need to be considered since it’s different from DSL and cable. Here are your options –
  1. Bridge the connection by connecting your router to the Verizon router. You won’t be saving any money this way, but you’ll be able to expand your network and access more advanced router features if you would like.
  2. If you have an internet plan that’s under 100 Mbps, you can connect to the Optical Network Terminal with an Ethernet connection. You just need to get an Ethernet cable that’s long enough to reach the ONT box.
  3. Set up a custom network. This is very complex, so you’ll need to do some in-depth research on how to do get that done.

The Verizon Fios Gigabit Plan

The Verizon Gigabit Internet plan offers up to 940 Mbps download speeds for $79.99/month. You can choose to get just internet alone, or to include your TV and phone plan as well.

The Pros

  • The main benefit of the Verizon Gigabit plan is the 940 Mbps download speed
  • You also get 880 Mbps upload speed
  • With a Fios connection, you can watch TV and videos in 4K quality, giving you the ultimate user experience.

The Cons

  • One of the only things that really sucks about the Verizon Fios connection is that is has a limited availability until they decide to expand into other parts of the United States.
  • Pricing is a bit high, so you’ll have to settle for less than gigabit speeds if you still want to get a Fios connection.

Other Verizon Fios Internet Plans

If you don’t necessarily need gigabit speeds, but still want a Fios connection, Verizon Fios offers a few other plans.

Fios 100 – You get 100Mbps for $39.99/monthly

Fios 300 – Use the internet at speeds up to 300 Mbps for $59.99/monthly

Both of these plans are internet only, meaning they don’t include TV or phone.

If you’ve thought about all of these things and made the decision that you want to try out a Verizon Fios Gigabit plan, then make sure to call the Verizon Fios customer service to see if you’re in the service area.
