Hall of Fame Game: A Look Into This Special Event
The Hall of Fame Game is an annual preseason matchup of NFL teams held at Tom Benson Stadium in Canton, Ohio. This event is part of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Week and honors the newly inducted Hall of Fame members.
History Of The Game
The first Hall of Fame Game with current NFL teams was played in 1962, between the Dallas Cowboys and the St. Louis Cardinals, in honor of the Hall’s second induction class. The game has been held every year since, with the exception of the strike-shortened 1982 season.
All of the greatest players in NFL history have been honored with enshrinement into the Hall of Fame. As such, the players that have participated in the Hall of Fame Game have incorporated some of the game’s greatest stars. Charles Woodson, Dan Marino, Reggie White, Barry Sanders, and Emmitt Smith are just a few of the Hall of Famers to have been a part of the Hall of Fame Game.
Over the years, Hall of Fame weekend has showcased some truly remarkable moments:
- The first game in 1962 saw the Cowboys beat the Cardinals, 47-13.
- The 1968 matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and St. Louis Cardinals featured five members from the first Pro Football Hall of Fame class.
- The 1986 game was the first Monday night game of the season, which was a draw between the New York Jets and the Buffalo Bills.
- The 2002 Game marked the first time two future Hall of Famers (Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana) coached the two teams.
The Hall of Fame Game is an annual event that pays tribute to the greatest players in NFL history. With a long and interesting history, the game is a showpiece to the fact that football is America’s favorite sport.
